Financing of "Aufbau Ost" Programme: Solidarity Pact II - Key Issues and Current Discussions
Zientková, Dominika ; Kučera, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Mlsna, Petr (referee)
The thesis deals with an issue of financing German Unity, curentlly through solidarity pact II. Shortly after the reunification of Germany in 1990 it was obvious that the process of equalizing the economic levels of both parts of Germany required high financial transfers. And so the ambitious project called the economic reconstruction of eastern Germany (Aufbau Ost) was launched in order to provide eastern Germany the needed financial sources. Today it is done through the so called solidarity pact II. The aim of this thesis is to find out how two economically different developed federal states (Saxony and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern) were gaining and using those financial sources during a specified period. Another aim is to analyze the ways of usage, to identify the unusualness and also to find the cause of criticism that comes from the western old federal states. On the basis of the analysis of the gaining financial recourses by Saxony and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern emerged partly interesting findings. Both states, although they have many differences, invest in a similar way, especially into the infrastructural deficits. Opposite to that, they do not invest that much into the equalization of disproportional financial power of municipalities. This fact is one of the reasons why the old federal states...
Nazi Anti-Semitism Remembered: Jewish Memorials in the SBZ and GDR between the Years 1945-1987
McQuiggan, Sean ; Emler, David (advisor) ; Šmidrkal, Václav (referee)
The thesis is an exploration into the Jewish memorial sites erected in the Soviet Zone of Occupation (SBZ) and German Democratic Republic (GDR) between the years 1945 and 1987. The primary aim of the thesis is to provide a collection of Jewish memorial sites in East Germany during the aforementioned time frame. It uses the theories of French historian Pierre Nora as well a number of other authors to legitimize the importance of these memorial sites. In addition, a typology was created by the author to ensure the proper collection of the memorial sites in order to reflect the research question: how was Nazi anti-Semitism remembered in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) through memorial sites between the years 1945-1987? The thesis is, however, more than just a collection of data. It also provides observations about trends and patterns in Jewish memorialization as well uses a method introduced by Ahenk Yilmaz to examine the individual characteristics of the sites. The thesis concludes that Jewish memorialization in the GDR was primarily a bottom-up approach, a fact that has been overlooked by many researchers in the field. From publicly owned to private owned company - The case study of Carl Zeiss company transformation within the reunification of Germany.
Novotný, Ondřej ; Kučera, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Kačmárová, Pavla (referee)
The thesis is focused on a company transition from a centrally planned economy to a market-oriented economy. It attempts to illustrate the example of German company Carl Zeiss (Jena), which was after World War II divided into two new companies - eastern VEB Carl Zeiss Jena and western Carl Zeiss Oberkochen. After the fall of the Berlin Wall were both companies reunified. Due to the large differences in the economic environment from which both companies came, it was a very difficult process that lasted almost until the beginning of the second half of the 90s. Like most of the former East German corporate sector, the Jena factory found itself in a crisis. Jena hoped, however, that it will gain support from the western brother in Oberkochen. However, due to inherent problems of Oberkochen and excessive production structure of Jena could Western counterpart assume take over only a small part of the eastern company. Through the privatization, which was in charge of the Treuhandanstalt, paradoxically another partition of the factory in Jena occurred. From everything that was not assumed by Oberkochen, was founded the company Jenoptik. The aim of the study is to determine, if the two companies have survived the transformation, also to which extent can their transformation be described as a successful one...
Východní a západní Německo po sjednocení: Analýza mzdových rodílů
Groero, Jaroslav ; Pertold, Filip (advisor) ; Nikolovová, Pavla (referee)
Under socialism workers had their wages set by the central planners.. In my thesis I use panel data from SHARLIFE questionnaire in order to analyze how returns to East German human capital variables changed after the reunification in 1990.I also compare these returns to West German returns to human capital variables. Before 1990 the returns to experience and education were lower in East Germany than in West Germany. After the reunification East German returns to experience obtained before 1990 and to education decreased. I find a significant decrease of returns to high educated workers who spent in the East German educational system 15 and more years. East German returns to both human capital variables are smaller than West German ones before the reunification and the difference is more pronounced after the reunification.
